Megan Skiles has been selected as one of the 20 Under 40 Young Professionals in Fremont, an honor that highlights her dedication and contributions to the community. Skiles, originally from McCook, Nebraska, has become a key figure in Fremont’s economic development, bringing with her a rich background in international relations and a passion for fostering community growth.

A path less traveled

Skiles’ journey to becoming the president and CEO of the Greater Fremont Development Council is a testament to her diverse interests and unwavering commitment to community development.

“I grew up in McCook, Nebraska, and attended college at the University of Nebraska at Omaha,” she said. “I majored in international relations, concentrating in international business and policy, and minored in art history.”

Her path to economic development wasn’t straightforward.

“I stumbled upon the economic development profession and have absolutely loved it, ”she said.

Skiles first entered the field in 2017 at the Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership. Over five years, she held various roles, including running the ag and manufacturing councils and working in site development, business retention and attraction.

A new chapter in Fremont

In late 2021, Skiles made a significant career move to Fremont.

“I made the shift to Fremont towards the end of 2021 and am thrilled to be serving in this capacity for this community,” she said.

Since then, she has been a dynamic force in Fremont’s economic landscape.

Skiles describes her role with enthusiasm: “My current title is President and CEO of the Greater Fremont Development Council. I run the organization, managing a staff of three and overseeing all our programs, which include quality of life, business attraction, existing business retention and expansion, and workforce development.”

“Megan has proven to be the right leader at the right time for the GFDC. She is smart, articulate, and engaging and has great knowledge relative to economic development. We are very fortunate to have her leading the GFDC team,” said Brett Richmond, president/CEO of Methodist and GFDC Board Chair.

Her dedication to the community is evident through her involvement in various local and regional organizations. Skiles serves on the Fremont Chamber Board of Directors, the Nebraska Economic Developers Association and the International Economic Development Council, and participates in numerous community sub-committees through the GFDC.

Building partnerships and driving progress

Skiles’ love for her job is deeply rooted in her passion for building partnerships and working collaboratively.

“There are so many aspects of my job I love. I love building partnerships and working together with these ‘extended teams’ over a period of time to accomplish something big,” she said.

Her role involves a wide range of responsibilities.

“No two days are the same,” she said. “We meet with over 60 businesses every year todo business retention and expansion visits, checking in to see how local business owners feel about the community and identifying opportunities and challenges.”

Skiles’ impact extends beyond immediate business concerns. She has been instrumental in securing significant grant funding for the community.

“We’re managing about $35 million in grants, with $32 million of that being new to the organization since I’ve started,” she said.

These funds support various initiatives, including site development and housing projects, demonstrating her ability to drive tangible, positive change in Fremont.

A strong sense of community

What sets Skiles apart is her genuine connection to the Fremont community. She speaks highly of the collaboration and support she experiences daily.

“I particularly enjoy the community and our board. There’s a lot of collaboration in Fremont, and many individuals are willing to roll up their sleeves and help get things done,” she said.

“When it comes to building partnerships and driving results, Fremont, GFDC, and the GOEDP are all fortunate to have Megan help leading the way,” said Heath Mello, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “A thoughtful leader with a passion for collaboration, Megan continues to set the standard for economic developers here in Nebraska.”

Her work with the Port Authority stands out as a significant achievement.

“The progress with the Port Authority is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. We’ve created a new government entity with a great board of directors, which is super exciting,” she said.

The Inland Port Authority Board was formed in February and March 2023 following state officials announcing that Fremont would be the first of two cities in Nebraska designated as inland ports. Having an inland port in Fremont will attract new businesses and expand trade.

A personal touch

Balancing her professional and personal life, Skiles finds joy in her family and hobbies.

“My husband, Justin, is in the Air Force, and we have three dogs. We love to travel, try new foods, hike, and just be outside,” she said.

This adventurous spirit and love for exploration undoubtedly influence her dynamic approach to economic development.

A bright future

As Megan Skiles continues to lead the GFDC, her vision for Fremont’s future remains clear and ambitious. Her dedication to the community, ability to build strong partnerships and commitment to continuous learning are key factors in her success.

Skiles’ recognition as one of Fremont’s 20 Under 40 Young Professionals is well-deserved. Her journey from McCook, Nebraska, to the forefront of economic development in Fremont is inspiring, and her impact on the community will be felt for years to come.
