As the Latino community in Fremont grows, area schools are assessing ways to better reach and serve its members.

In 2010, Fremont’s Hispanic and Latino population accounted for 10.6 percent of Fremont’s total population at 2,778, according to U.S. census estimates. By 2016, that number had increased by more than 1,000 to 3,875. The Hispanic and Latino population accounted for 14.7 percent of Fremont’s total population in 2016. Most of those individuals — nearly 3,000 — come from Mexico.

For the last two years, Archbishop Bergan Catholic School has been actively working on increasing its enrollment numbers from within Hispanic community through a program called the Latino Enrollment Initiative, which stems from the Latino Enrollment Institute at the University of Notre Dame and aims to increase Latino enrollment in Catholic schools.
