Fueling Business Growth: GFDC’s Small Business Education Series Continues

7 Oct 2024
The Greater Fremont Development Council continues its Small Business Education Series, providing local businesses with the knowledge and tools to enhance operations and drive success. The most recent session, Creating Successful Internships, partnered with the Fremont Area Chamber and its Topics @ 12 series. A panel of experts provided valuable insights into the benefits of internships and how they contribute to workforce development. As the series continues, GFDC offers upcoming sessions on QuickBooks training and business tax preparation to support the Fremont business community further.
Recap of the July Session: Creating Successful Internships
The July session focused on the importance of internships in building a solid talent pipeline for local businesses. Internships offer organizations the chance to gain fresh perspectives, increase productivity, and ensure future leadership through succession planning. Moreover, they provide students with essential work experience, professional development, and potential employment opportunities.
During the panel discussion, Todd Hansen from Metropolitan Community College, Taylor Tucker from Midland University, and Rose Baker with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development explored various aspects of internships. They addressed the challenges students face when seeking internships, the resources available to help them, and best practices for businesses looking to engage students in meaningful ways.
The panel highlighted the Intern Nebraska Grant Program, which provides financial assistance to businesses that create internships in the state. Rose Baker shared how this program supports companies in developing robust internship programs while offering students invaluable real-world experience.
Statistics shared during the session reinforced the importance of internships for businesses and students. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE):
- 61% of internships are paid.
- 70% of interns receive job offers from the companies they intern with; of those, 80% accept, meaning 56% of interns become full-time employees.
- 71% of those hired remain on staff after one year, and 44% after five years.
These figures demonstrate the long-term value of internships in workforce development for businesses seeking to strengthen their teams and students looking to jumpstart their careers.
