Powering Progress: Fremont’s Manufacturing Industry Leads the Way in Innovation and Workforce Development

8 Oct 2024
Manufacturing Month recognizes the incredible impact of the manufacturing industry on local communities. Manufacturing in Fremont, Nebraska, is pivotal in driving economic growth and workforce development. Home to various key manufacturers, the city has built a reputation for innovation, sustainability, and community involvement. Two leading companies, Structural Component Systems (SCS) and Fremont Beef Company, provide excellent examples of how manufacturers contribute to Fremont’s thriving economy while maintaining a strong commitment to their workforce.
SCS has been a fixture in the Midwest's building industry since 1987. It specializes in designing and manufacturing roof and floor trusses, wall panels, and engineered wood products. In a recent interview, Diane A. Mallette of SCS highlighted the company's significant role in Fremont's economy.
"As a 100% employee-owned manufacturer, employing approximately 550, our employees contribute significantly to the local economy. Last January, we became 100% employee-owned, significantly benefiting our employees and the community. Employee-owned companies are less likely to fail, tend to buy locally, and have less employee turnover," Mallette explained. "We are also excited to partner with Fremont High School and their construction technology lab."
This collaborative spirit drives SCS's success and strengthens Fremont's workforce, ensuring the next generation has the skills needed to excel in manufacturing.
Embracing Innovation and Sustainability in Manufacturing
Advancements in technology and sustainable practices are critical to the long-term success of manufacturers. SCS and Fremont Beef Company have embraced these principles to stay competitive while reducing their environmental footprint.
"We are always advancing ourselves, using technology throughout our plant," said Mallette. "We have updated our warehouse management system (WMS), which barcodes our completed products and lumber inventory. This has helped considerably with product ordering and the reduction of waste. We also avoid printing layouts by utilizing computer-generated images throughout production."
These innovations at SCS reflect the company's commitment to sustainability while efficiently producing wood components for the construction industry.
Similarly, Fremont Beef Company has continually adapted its manufacturing processes to meet the growing demand for quality meat products while ensuring food safety and sustainability. Matt Taylor, President and CEO of Fremont Beef, credits the company's success to its workforce and their innovative ideas.
"We continuously seek out processes and procedures that make today's product safer, more efficient, and higher quality, all while requiring fewer resources than it took to make yesterday's product," said Taylor. "The dedicated team members and stakeholders at Fremont Beef drive our innovation."
Workforce Development: Attracting and Retaining Talent
Manufacturers like SCS and Fremont Beef understand that workforce development is crucial to the industry's sustainability. By fostering a positive work environment and investing in employee growth, these companies ensure they attract and retain skilled workers in Fremont.
At SCS, the employee-ownership model has created a culture of accountability and pride. "Spreading the wealth to our employees means they are more financially sound and will contribute even more to the local economy," Mallette emphasized.
Fremont Beef has adopted a similar approach, focusing on personal and professional development. "To attract and retain skilled workers, it takes a work environment where everyone is challenged regularly but valued for their hard work and dedication," Taylor stated. We regularly help team members at all levels with personal, industrial skills, mechanical, or professional development."
By fostering these supportive environments, SCS and Fremont Beef ensure their employees thrive both inside and outside the workplace, helping to solidify Fremont's reputation as a manufacturing hub.
