The Fremont Family YMCA can move forward with plans to build a new indoor aquatics center after the city council on Tuesday approved a $200,000 purchase and development agreement that will sell much of Memorial Park to the YMCA.

Some of the details about what will happen next with the park itself, however, have yet to be finalized.

The YMCA will use about 1.5 acres to build a 38,000-square-foot indoor aquatics center. The $6 million to $8 million price tag will be raised through private funds.

A preliminary schematic indicates the southwest corner of the park, retained by the city in the transaction, will be remade as a tribute to military veterans.

City and YMCA officials have said maintaining memorial respect for veterans and preserving the Avenue of Flags along Military Avenue will be paramount in designing the new layout.
